This film is the third in a series of award-winning films about the struggles of the Kurdish people by Kurdish director Bahman Ghobadi. Using a documentary style, it probes the hardships faced by refugees living in a border village on the eve of the Iraq war, told through the eyes of the children. The New York Times called it a "heartbreaking film," saying "it presents a harsh account of war, displacement and deprivation that is saved from utter bleakness by a tough, earthy lyricism." The LA Weekly said that the "imagery is so boilingly alive that we come away from it feeling exhilarated rather than depressed." The film won best-film awards at the San Sebastian International Film Festival in 2004 and the Berlin International Film Festival in 2005.

Not Rated.
