This is the second film by Buthanese-Tibetan filmmaker Khyentse Norbu,
who directed "The Cup," a 1999 comedy about Buddhist monks
obsessed with soccer. Norbu's new film also explores the differences
between West and East and old and new. It tells the story of a young man
who dreams of emigrating to America, but through his efforts to get
there learns new respect for traditional Buddhist values. The Washington
Post said the film is "simply magical," both because of its
spectacular Himalayan setting and its "affecting, warmly
spirited" script. The film won the audience award at the 2004
Deauville Asian Film Festival.
