In 1901, an old gunfighter dying of cancer (John Wayne) settles into a
rooming house in Carson City, Nevada, hoping to pass away quietly. But his notoriety makes
that impossible.
John Wayne's last - and many say finest - film; his performance is especially
poignant because Wayne himself had battled cancer for many years (he would die of it three
years later). Two other veterans of many, many westerns play strong supporting roles:
Jimmy Stewart and Lauren Bacall. Adapted (rather loosely) from the novel of the same name
by Glendon Swarthout
Rated PG.
