This film is based on writer-director Sijie Dai's autobiographical novel
of the same title. It is about two teenage boys from the city who are
relocated to a small, remote village to be "reeducated" during
the Cultural Revolution. Both fall in love with the daughter of the local
tailor and try to woo her by introducing her to forbidden Western
literature.
The film was nominated for a Golden Globe award for best foreign language
film in 2003.
Not rated in the US but most of its foreign ratings seem to be the
equivalent of PG-13.
